I am doing research and potentially writing a book on Absalom Austin Townsend (1810-1888). He was my great-great-great grandfather and an early pioneer of Wisconsin (in 1827) and one of the 49ers in the California Gold Rush and founder of the town Rough and Ready, CA. Absalom was the son of Samuel Townsend (1783--1863) who was born in Frederickstown, NY and is buried in Jo Daviess County, IL..
Based on information on longislandsurnames.com and other research I believe the following to be true but would be interested in any additional information, comments or confirmation from TSA members ...
Samuel Townsend (1783-1863) was the son of Eber Townsend (1760-1822) and Sarah Elizabeth Drew. Eber was born in Putnam County, NY and is buried in Steuben County, NY.
Eber Townsend (1760-1822) was the son of Charles Townsend, Sr. (born between 1722 and 1727? in Oyster Bay, NY and died between 1783 and 1805? and is buried in Dutchess County, NY). I believe Charles Townsend's wife was Phoebe Dickinson.
Charles Townsend, Sr. was the son of Daniel Townsend (born 1685 or 1686 and died between 1759 and 1768).
Daniel Townsend was the son of Daniel Townsend (??? - 1702). Daniel Townsend Sr. was born in Oyser Bay and buried in Nassau, NY.. His wife was Susannah Forman.
Daniel Townsend, Sr. was the son of John Townsend (1608? - 1668) of Oyster Bay, NY
Any additional information or comments on this lineage would be greatly appreciated.
I just stumbled across the name Absalom Townsend in the Index of the United States for 1920 and thought it might be the same person that you are looking for. Mary
